Moses B. Cotsworth proposed the International Fixed Calendar in the early twentieth century as a practical repair for irregular accounting months. Twelve familiar months remain; a new month called Sol sits between June and July.

The appeal is mechanical. Every month contains exactly four weeks. The first is always the same weekday. Quarters and payroll periods stop changing shape. A printed calendar becomes reusable.

13 × 28 = 364. The missing day is where politics enters.

A common year needs Year Day after December 28. A leap year needs another intercalary day around midyear. Those days sit outside the ordinary week, preserving the calendar's fixed pattern while interrupting an unbroken seven-day religious cycle.

Sol follows June. Year Day follows December 28. The leap rule follows the Gregorian rule; the extra leap day is placed at midyear and does not receive a weekday name.

THE CULTURE WAS BUILT FOR TWELVE

The original BTM draft treated resistance to thirteen as an esoteric conspiracy. The more interesting answer is structural inertia: societies stack meaning on top of a calendar until changing the calendar means changing nearly everything else.

TWELVE IS EVERYWHERE

Twelve Gregorian months. Twelve zodiac signs. Twelve hours around the clock face. Twelve-note chromatic systems. Twelve apostles. Familiar systems reinforce one another even when their origins differ.

EDITORIAL CORRECTION

The Kabbalistic Tree of Life is not normally described as twelve primary spheres. Classical diagrams center ten sefirot, sometimes discuss Da'at, and connect them through paths. Tarot correspondences are also more complicated than a one-to-one twelve-sign map.

THIRTEEN IS NOT THE BUG

In some Italian traditions thirteen is fortunate while seventeen carries the heavier superstition. Missing thirteenth floors are primarily a commercial accommodation to local fear, not evidence that the IFC was suppressed.

The calendar failed because compatibility is a form of power.

TRY IT WITHOUT BELIEVING IT

A calendar is an interface. Test the interface before declaring it liberation or heresy.

Pick one ordinary month. Rewrite every appointment into a 28-day grid. Mark payroll, medication, school, bills, birthdays, and maintenance. Then add Year Day and a hypothetical leap day.
